Light a Candle
Anthony Jerome (Jerry) Evens was born February 18, 1931 in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Ernest Anthony Evens and Katherine Marie (Curry) Evens. He was followed in birth by twins: brother Paul, and sister Patricia (Jordan). He grew toward adulthood in Albert Lea and then, from age 10, in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from University of Detroit High School he began his undergraduate studies, also at University of Detroit. He transferred to Michigan State University where he received his degree in English. Jerry then joined the US Air Force. His first posting was to a US military honor guard stationed in Tokyo Japan with the US Occupation forces. He enjoyed immersive exposure to Japanese culture and took advantage of opportunities to travel in Thailand and India while on leave.
In 1956 Jerry married Ruth Spinniken whom he had met while at Michigan State. On his next posting, in San Antonio, Texas, while serving as a military police officer, Jerry was admitted to basic flight training. A son, Paul (Natalie Garrett), was born during this time. While stationed in McAllen, Texas for jet flight training, a daughter, Kathy (Atkinson, Matt deceased) was born. With flight training completed, Jerry was assigned to the 310th Bombardment Wing of the Strategic Air Command stationed at Schilling Air Base in Salina, Kansas where he crewed on a B-47. There Mark (Jennifer) was born.
Upon leaving the Airforce in late 1960, the family relocated to Royal Oak, Michigan where Jerry found a role he enjoyed as a realtor. The family moved to West Bloomfield in 1969. He and Ruth divorced in 1973.
Jerry left real estate to work as a stock broker in the 1980’s. He met and formed a loving life partnership with Andrea Sheridan which lasted until his last day. Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, and father; by his brother and sister and their spouses Patricia (Kady) and Thom Jordan. He is survived by his three children, his grandchildren Axle Evens, David Atkinson (Elinore) and Jennifer Clark (Aaron), and great great grandsons William and Henry Clark. And he is survived by his nieces and nephews Valerie Jordan Hagee (Joe), Joseph Jordan (Teresa), Michael Jordan (Mary Pat), Mary Pat Jordan (John Binion), Mary Wallenweber (Mike, (Eric Wallenweber, deceased)), Jeff Evens, David Evens, Carol Ruth Evens, Steve Evens, Julia Larsen (Robert), and Kersten Sandifar (Denise) and their many children and grandchildren.
